چکیده

Introduction: The NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) Mars Tumbleweed rover is a concept for a lightweight, spherical, deployable structure, with a configuration that maximizes drag to capture the Martian wind for mobility and extended mission duration. The wind-blown mobility of a Tumbleweed rover makes it an ideal platform for conducting distributed geophysical and meteorological surveys of broad areas on the Martian surface, filling a niche between the wideranging remote sensing capabilities of orbiting platforms and the focused, in-situ measurements of conventional landers and rovers (Figure 1).

Vision-based Terrain Classification and Classifier Fusion for Planetary Exploration Rovers

Autonomous rover operation plays a key role in planetary exploration missions. Rover systems require more and more autonomous capabilities to improve efficiency and robustness. Rover mobility is one of the critical components that can directly affect mission success. Knowledge of the physical properties of the terrain surrounding a planetary exploration rover can be used to allow a rover system...

AEGIS Automated Targeting for the MER Opportunity Rover

The Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science (AEGIS) system enables automated data collection by planetary rovers. AEGIS software was uploaded to the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission’s Opportunity rover in December 2009 and has successfully demonstrated automated onboard targeting based on scientist-specified objectives. Prior to AEGIS, images were transmitted from the rover t...

Advanced Robotics Technology Infusion to the Nasa Mars Exploration Rover (mer) Project

This paper presents four new technology developments and their infusion into the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission. These technologies were not ready for infusion prior to the launch of this mission. Three of these new capabilities are designed to increase the level of autonomy for the operations, i.e., fewer ground-in-the-loop steps for executing commands. One of the new capabilities is des...

Advances in Simulation of Planetary Wheeled Mobile Robots

Ever since the Sojourner rover of the United States landed on Mars in 1997 (Jet Propulsion Laboratory [JPL], a), there has been an upsurge in the exploration of planets using wheeled mobile robots (WMRs or rovers). The twin rovers that followed, Spirit and Opportunity, have endured many years of activity on Mars and have made many significant discoveries (JPL, b). Several other new missions are...

A study of visual and tactile terrain classification and classifier fusion for planetary exploration rovers

Knowledge of the physical properties of terrain surrounding a planetary exploration rover can be used to allow a rover system to fully exploit its mobility capabilities. Terrain classification methods provide semantic descriptions of the physical nature of a given terrain region. These descriptions can be associated with nominal numerical physical parameters, and/or nominal traversability estim...
